RADIOSOL Beginner Guide: Controls & First Steps
Published · Updated
RADIOSOL is not a combat-first survival game. The opening hours are about route planning, shade, climbing, radio signals and careful use of systems. If you understand those habits early, the rest of Chapter 1 becomes much less frustrating.
This beginner guide covers the first controls, the first useful mental model, the route out of the shelter and the early objectives toward Megapol. It also links to the detailed signal, collectible and progress pages once you are ready to go beyond the basics.
Start with the controls
The researched controls use WASD to move and E to interact. Space jumps, Shift sprints and F toggles the flashlight. These are the inputs you will use most while moving through tunnels, pipes and damaged structures.
Tab opens the systems menu. This is where downloaded files and subsystems matter, so do not treat a completed download as the end of the interaction. If a new ability or file appears to do nothing, check whether it needs to be activated.
The marker action uses Q, then the left mouse button. Use it as soon as you identify a distant landmark. In a semi-open map with few explicit pointers, your own markers are often more useful than wandering toward the tallest object on screen.
Understand sunlight first
Direct sunlight is the main threat, not an enemy you should fight through. When you stand in the open, your systems can fail, and a failed run can undo a lot of careful exploration. Treat every patch of light as an obstacle with a cost.
Before leaving a shadow, name the next shadow. It might be a pipe, a wall, a rail line, a concrete support or the dark side of a ruined structure. If you cannot identify the next safe stop, climb somewhere and look for a better route.
Cross exposed ground in short planned hops. A slightly longer route through shade is usually safer than a direct sprint across the sun. If exposure becomes dangerous, return to shade and wait for systems to recover instead of forcing the next move.
Complete the shelter tutorial
The tutorial inside the starting shelter introduces the machine and its systems. Complete it before thinking about efficiency. The goal at this stage is not speed; it is knowing which systems you can open, activate and download.
Near the first tunnel, you can descend into the shaft and find the first Calypso 5 probe. This is a good early habit because all nine probes matter for the Odyssey achievement. The full list is on our RADIOSOL Collectibles page.
After surfacing, you can optionally return to the starting capsule and leave again. That action is tied to an early achievement, but do it only if you are comfortable returning through the known route.
Move toward Megapol Station
The early direction is toward Megapol Station. Follow pipes, rail structures and shaded walls rather than trying to walk straight across open ground. Megapol has a large letter M, which makes it a useful visual anchor.
Before you reach the station sequence, you sign a document and select three fingerprints to contact N3. This starts the story objectives. From that point, N3 directs you toward the Power Sphere behind Megapol.
At Megapol, interact with the terminal at the locked pressure door. You will not solve the Power Sphere route immediately, but marking the objective and learning the area gives the next exploration run a clear purpose.
Use the systems menu
The systems menu is part of progression, not just an inventory screen. After you download transmitter software, signatures or access files, open the menu and confirm that the relevant item is active.
This becomes especially important later. NED must be activated after you receive Level 3 Access, and the fan terminal near Agglomerate 5 can reject progress if the required file is not active. A short systems check can save a long return trip.
Radio markers can be saved. If a signal configuration or station is useful, mark it. This makes it easier to return to a source without rediscovering the route under time pressure.
Early upgrade and route logic
The early route runs from the shelter to Megapol Station, then toward Agglomerate 5. Along the way, access levels and downloads prepare the Power Sphere route. You do not need to optimize every optional object during your first pass.
Some upgrades make later navigation much safer. NightOwl, for example, becomes important in the dark Depot. Transmitter software and the NED signature are also tied to later puzzles rather than being purely optional toys.
If you want a compact list of these tasks, use the RADIOSOL Checklist. The RADIOSOL Frequencies page is the better stop once you reach the Depot or Radio 0 puzzles.
Save and exploration habits
Save from the main menu before large optional detours. This is especially useful before sunlight experiments, long climbs and routes that go away from the main story landmarks. A save does not make you faster, but it makes exploration less punishing.
Use tall structures for a view before committing to a route. Identify Megapol, Agglomerate 5, the train repair yard, Chemical Plant, Depot, Radio 0 and the Power Sphere as anchors. Our RADIOSOL Map Guide groups those locations into route logic.
Finally, do not rush the ending of the current chapter. After you power the Power Sphere, shadows move faster and the return route becomes more dangerous. A careful player who knows the next shaded stop will usually arrive more reliably than one trying to sprint the final route.
Current status and sources
The facts here come from the official Steam listing, a fan resource and gameplay research checked on October 5, 2026. RADIOSOL launched with Chapter 1 on September 30, 2026, and later chapters are planned as updates.
No active RADIOSOL Codes had been verified at that time. Controller support and an official Steam Deck rating were not listed in the checked store data, so treat those details as unconfirmed rather than assuming them.
